Serger 101 – Jumping into the basics September

Learn the basics of sewing on a serger. We will play with various stitch lengths and
differential settings. We will also walk through making a scrunchie on your serger so you can
marvel at your completed project at the end of class!
Skills you’ll learn:

● Using a serger
● How to thread your serger
● Finishing thread tails
● Make a scrunchie

Prerequisites: some sewing knowledge/experience preferred (ideally used a sewing
machine before even if a beginners); ideal for any level sewist who is wanting to get more
comfortable working on a serger; can be brand new to working on a serger, or someone who is
comfortable but wants to explore other settings on their machine.

Supply list:

Serger/manual, along with toolkit for threading
(tweezers, screwdriver/hexkey for changing needles)

Variety of fabric scraps to practice stitch settings (min size 7”x7” squares); bring a
mix of woven and knit, and different weights too!

4”x18” fabric strip for scrunchie creation

Thread/serger cones

9” piece of 1⁄4-3⁄8” wide elastic

Tools/Supplies

soft measuring tape, sewing clips/pins, scissors/rotary cutter, ruler

Recommended to bring notebook + pen for noting stitch settings
